Alexander Skarsgård and Dane DeHaan are set to headline The Tiger. The film is inspired by the chilling true story of a man-eating tiger in ‘90s Russia. Ukrainian filmmaker Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi, best known for his 2014 film The Tribe, will write and direct The Tiger, based on John Vaillant’s nonfiction book of the same name. The film has been in the works for over a decade and once had Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, Mother!) attached as director, with Brad Pitt in the lead. Aronofsky is still a producer on the film.

The official synopsis for The Tiger (via Deadline) reads:

“Set in snowy far east Russia in the late 90s, the feature follows a group of men — referred to as the Tiger Team — who work to protect endangered tigers from poachers and logging operations. The story follows Vanzin (Skarsgård), the Team’s leader whose sense of duty is tested when he’s charged with hunting down and exterminating a tiger that killed a poacher in self-defense. DeHaan would portray Kanchuga, a young environmental scientist and newest member of the Team.”

Darren Aronofsky is producing The Tiger via his Protozoa Pictures along with Plan B and Wild Bunch AG, and the film will launch sales at the upcoming Cannes Film Market. Aronofsky released a statement saying,

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“As a producer, I’ve wanted to do two things for a while now: one is to make this film, and the other is to work with the brilliant auteur that is Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi. I am truly excited to be involved with a project that will allow me to do both, and cannot wait to bring this story to the world.”

Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi debuted with the 2014 film The Tribe, about a deaf teenager drawn towards crime and prostitution. The film was told entirely in Ukrainian sign language and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Slaboshpytskyi is now making its return to feature films and couldn’t be more excited about collaborating with Hollywood A-listers Darren Aronofsky, Alexander Skarsgård, and Dane DeHaan.

“I am so excited to make this film, and am overwhelmed with admiration towards the team that has rallied behind it. I’ve worked on the story of The Tiger for a very long time, and the chance to see it realized is a dream come true. Darren is a producer of singular taste and talent, and Alexander and Dane are once-in-a-lifetime stars. I can’t imagine a better or more brilliant group of people as collaborators.”

While the synopsis for The Tiger doesn’t give away much and makes it seem like one of several generic man vs. beast movies, it is actually based on subject matter that is quite shocking and much deeper. In what would be considered a spoiler, the tiger in question didn’t kill the poacher in self-defense but in an act of vengeance. After the poacher, Vladimir Markov wounded the tiger and stole its kill, the hungry and injured beast tracked Markov to his cabin and waited two days before killing Markov and eating him.

The Tiger will also delve into the moral conflicts faced by Skarsgård and DeHaan’s characters. An anti-poaching squad leader and a conservationist tasked with hunting the animal they previously protected, will make for some incredible drama. There is currently no word on The Tiger’s release date, but stay tuned for more updates.

For now, you can check out Alexander Skarsgård in the Viking revenge saga, The Northman. Directed by Robert Eggers, the film is now available on video on demand. Dane DeHaan can currently be seen in HBO Max’s true crime series The Staircase. DeHaan will next appear in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
