Director Brett Morgen has released the first trailer for Moonage Daydream, about late music legend David Bowie. This release comes hours before the documentary’s scheduled premiere at the Cannes Film Festival’s Midnight Screenings section. The feature length film, described as a “cinematic odyssey” and “immersive experience”, relies on never-before-seen footage, performances, interviews and music to tell the tale of Bowie’s artistic and spiritual journey. It is the first documentary that has received the Bowie estate’s approval.

Oscar-nominated Morgen wrote, directed, produced, and edited Moonage Daydream. He has been working on the film for the last 5 years: in 2017, he was granted access to the British rock star’s personal archives, including all his master recordings and 35mm and 16mm film of his stage performances. Moonage Daydream features 40 remastered musical tracks from original studio recordings, including Changes, Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Life on Mars, Rebel Rebel, Fame, and Golden Years.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

The film is narrated by David Bowie, and explores his commitment to art forms including film, music, painting, sculpture, video and audio collage, screenwriting, and live theater. In the trailer we hear him say:

“All people, no matter who they are, all wish they’d appreciated life more. It’s what you do in life that’s important, not how much time you have or what you’d wish you’d done. Life is fantastic.”

David Bowie’s Legacy Lives On

Bowie is considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. He rose to popularity in the UK after the 1969 release of Space Oddity. In 1972, he introduced a gender-defying alter ego, Ziggy Stardust. The success of his album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, gained him an international audience. During his lifetime, total record sales exceeded 100 million worldwide, making him one of the best-selling musicians of all time.

While remaining an important figure in music and pop culture, Bowie appeared in a number of films, including the cult-classics Labyrinth, The Man Who Fell to Earth, and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. On January 10, 2006, two days after his death, Blackstar, his 26th and final album, was released. He is remembered for his success in many artistic fields and his defiance of gender norms.
