Margot Robbie shares her first reaction to reading the Barbie movie script. After countless animated adaptations, the ubiquitous Mattel doll is making her first foray into live-action from director Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the script with her frequent collaborator Noah Baumbach. The star-studded Barbie movie cast is led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, who play the main variations of Barbie and Ken.

With the Barbie movie’s release date approaching, Robbie shared her first reaction to reading the script in a recent interview with BAFTA. The Barbie movie star said she thought the script was “so good,” though she never expected the studio to actually let them make the film. When pressed for more details about the mysterious script, Robbie responded, “Can’t tell ya.” Read what she shared or watch the video below:

The first time I read the Barbie script, my reaction was, “Ah! This is so good. What a shame it will never see the light of day because they are never going to let us make this movie.” But they did.

The Barbie Movie Script Has Received High Praise

Margot Robbie as Barbie Giving Ryan Gosling as Ken a Confused Smile

Gerwig and Baumbach’s Barbie movie script has received high praise not only from Robbie, but from another Barbie actor, Emma Mackey, who called it one of the best scripts she has ever read. The strength of the script shouldn’t come as a surprise for those familiar with Gerwig and Baumbach’s past work. Lady Bird and Little Women both earned Gerwig Oscar nominations for Best Screenplay, while Baumbach received the same honor for The Squid and the Whale and Marriage Story. Robbie’s reaction to the Barbie script is exciting since it indicates the film will be far from a conventional blockbuster.

Even after the Barbie movie trailer, it’s still unclear exactly what the film will be about, other than Barbie being banished from Barbie Land for being a less-than-perfect doll and traveling to the real world accompanied by Ken. The film is clearly a satirical comedy that aims to subvert expectations for what a Barbie movie would be about. With Will Ferrell staring as the CEO of Mattel, the Barbie movie could get critical of the toy company that manufactures the doll that creates unhealthy body expectations, which is probably why Robbie thought Mattel would never let them make the movie.
