Rachel Zegler has just landed her next lead role. Deadline reports that the West Side Story star will lend her voice to the animated musical Spellbound from Apple Original Films and Skydance Animation. Zegler will be playing Princess Ellian, the “tenacious princess who must go on a daring quest to save her family and kingdom after a mysterious spell transforms her parents into monsters and threatens to cover Lumbria in darkness forever.”
Spellbound will be directed by Vicky Jenson with the script coming from Lauren Hynek & Elizabeth Martin and Linda Woolverton. Oscar winner Alan Menken provides an original score for the movie with lyrics by Glenn Slater, while Chris Montan serves as executive music producer. Josh Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and David Lipman are producing for Skydance Animation.
Zegler is currently riding high off of the success of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake, a film that has garnered widespread acclaim. Many critics praised Zegler’s performance in particular, which won the actress a Golden Globe Award. The actress is also set to make her debut in the DCEU with a role in the upcoming superhero sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods and is set to star as the titular Disney princess in a live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Rachel Zegler Will Present a New Take on Snow White
When it was announced that Rachel Zegler would be starring in the new Snow White movie, there had been some criticism online from people unhappy to see a change with the character’s ethnicity. Zegler has spoken out about the social media complaints in a previous interview, and while she admits that she hadn’t exactly pictured herself as the most likely candidate for the role going into it, she has nevertheless embraced playing Snow White and hopes that her casting will be seen as an inspiration for others.
“When it was announced, it was a huge thing that was trending on Twitter for days, because all of the people were angry,” Zegler said, per Vanity Fair. “Never in a million years did I imagine that this would be a possibility for me. You don’t normally see Snow Whites that are of Latin descent. Even though Snow White is really a big deal in Spanish-speaking countries. Blanca Nieves is a huge icon, whether you’re talking about the Disney cartoon or just different iterations and the Grimm fairy tale and all the stories that come with it. But you don’t particularly see people who look like me or are me playing roles like that.”
Marc Webb (The Amazing Spider-Man) is directing the Snow White remake using a screenplay by Greta Gerwig and Erin Cressida Wilson. The film also stars Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen with additional casting announcements yet to be revealed. Because of controversy related to Peter Dinklage’s criticism about the inclusion of dwarf characters, it has been reported that there could be “magical creatures” that will be introduced to replace the seven dwarfs.
Spellbound does not yet have an official release date, nor does the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remake.
