Remember the Surface Duo, the Android “smartphone” from Microsoft with dual screen then updated in 2021 with a more up-to-date version, but still not free from defects?
The good news is that not only has the Redmond house not given up on presenting a successor, but rather decided to give up the iconic dual screen design and append to the format with folding screen (the best leaflets on the market) adopted by other manufacturers.

The unofficial information comes from internal sources from the company Zac Bowden Of Windows Centralwhich also reports that Microsoft already had a Surface Duo 3 with dual screen, size reduced and screens edge-to-edgewhich was scheduled for release in end of 2023.
Then the device was discarded and the Surface team launched into a Surface Duo 3 foldablewith 180 degree hinge, foldable inner screen and outer screen, just like Galaxy Z Fold 4, Vivo X Fold and other similar devices.
At this point there are a couple of considerations to make. Back in May, Microsoft had presented some patents to create a foldable device with hinge able to rotate a 360° (image below), but according to Bowden the Surface Duo 3 it will be equipped with the classic 180° hinge.
The second point concerns the name. Surface Duo call back to a dual screenbut since the device has a single (at least internally) foldable screen, Microsoft could decide to rename the linejust like done with the Surface Book and the Surface Laptop Studioalthough at the moment everyone in Redmond calls it the third generation Surface Duo.
As regards the specifications, nothing is known yet, but it is known that Microsoft developed the project “Perfect Together” to create asoftware experience that differentiates his smartphones from the competition, not dissimilar to how Apple does with iPhones And Mac (and as Samsung tries to do with Microsoft itself).
Finally, Bowden reveals how Microsoft have a renewed interest in Android, not just with the new foldingbut also with others smartphones from the classic form factor, and would be studying several prototypes to be presented as surface “for the masses”.
At the moment nothing is decided yetbut surely Microsoft’s plans are interesting, and they would give a stir to a sector polarized by a few producers. The problem is the launch dates (if they ever happen), as Microsoft has had in the recent past the bad habit of presenting devices with interesting but “outdated” hardware, which in the android world carries even more weight than PCs, not to mention the lack of software support.
