Shaun Weiss is back to work following his struggles with addiction and subsequent recovery. The actor, best known for appearing in The Mighty Ducks and its sequels during the 1990s, made headlines in January 2020 when he was arrested after he was found in a neighbor’s car parked in the garage. Weiss was charged with burglary and for being under the influence of methamphetamine at the time. In his mugshot, the former child star looked completely unrecognizable as a result of his addiction struggles.
Since the incident, Weiss has been committed to turning his life around. In January, he celebrated two years of sobriety by posting before-and-after images of himself before and after his recovery. It had Mighty Ducks fans wondering if a return to acting may have been in the cards for Weiss with him doing so much better after getting sober.
Weiss has now announced that his acting career is back on track. Taking to Instagram, he posted an image of himself revealing a first look at his character for the upcoming Lionsgate movie Jesus Revolution. Officially, this marks the first role for Weiss in 14 years, as he hasn’t been seen on screen since the 2008 comedy Drillbit Taylor. As the actor noted in the Instagram post’s caption, the film is his “first role in… a while.”
Jesus Revolution is directed by Jon Erwin (American Underdog) and written by Erwin and Jon Gunn. Inspired by true events, it is set in the 1970s and follows teenage hippies Greg (Joel Courtney) and Lonnie (Jonathan Roumie) teaming up with a charismatic street preacher (Kelsey Grammer) to create a “Jesus Revolution” that completely changed the world. The movie, announced by Lionsgate in February, doesn’t yet have an official release date.
Will Shaun Weiss Return as Goldberg on The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers?
Shaun Weiss returning to acting will please his fans that were hoping to see the former child star working again. After he’s finished filming Jesus Revolution, it seems possible that Weiss could end up making a special appearance of the Mighty Ducks sequel series, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, on Disney+. Several original stars appeared in the first season, and with Weiss actively acting again with so much fan support behind him, it seems that there’s a good chance that Greg Goldberg’s return could come to fruition.
“I always knew I wanted to bring back the original Ducks and tie them into this series,” executive producer and original Ducks writer Steven Brill said of getting the original stars into the new show, per EW. “We need season 2 because we gotta talk about Charlie! And Charlie’s mom Casey [Heidi Kling]! And what happened to the Bash Brothers and Julie ‘The Cat’ Gaffney [Colombe Jacobsen-Derstine]. We have stories and things we want to explore, and I’m excited to leave all the avenues open.”
Certainly, there would be room in there for Weiss as well, the former child star now officially acting again. Let’s hope it happens in the second season of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, which would help make up for losing Emilio Estevez after the first season.
