Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6.

The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6 is quite bizarre, as it largely kills the momentum that had been built around the reclamation of Mandalore. Since the season’s first episode, the overarching narrative has set up the Mandalorian people uniting to take back their homeworld they believed was poisoned and cursed. While Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze have proved that their people could live there once more, their attempt to find more Mandalorians has resulted in a largely ridiculous detour from that core mission.

In The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6, Din Djarin and Grogu join Bo-Katan in her mission to unite all Mandalorians together as one people. However, their attempt to meet with Bo-Katan’s former forces is hindered by the Duchess of Plazir-15 (played by Lizzo) and Captain Bombardier (Jack Black) requesting aid. As a result, the majority of the episode becomes wasted on a side quest.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Has Had A Strong Overarching Narrative… Until Now

Mandalore and Din Djarin from The Mandalorian.

Until The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6, every previous chapter had been in service to the future of Mandalore. Even The Mandalorian season 3, episode 3, with its Coruscant story about Dr. Pershing opened and closed with Djarin and Bo-Katan leaving Mandalore, fighting the Empire, and reuniting with the Children of the Watch. In comparison, the adventure on Plazir-15 is a major detour that has undoubtedly left many viewers confused and dissatisfied.

Needing the Mandalorians’ help with an ongoing crisis involving malfunctioning droids, the Duchess and Captain send Djarin and Bo-Katan on an inexplicable side mission to solve their problem before they’ll allow them to meet with Kryze’s fleet, who’ve become mercenaries in her absence. Although they offer to recognize Mandalore as a sovereign planet worthy of joining the New Republic, the adventure in question feels like a major waste of time compared to what’s been seen previously. If anything, the episode very much feels like the go-get-it missions Djarin embarked on in the series’ first season, a tired concept many thought the Star Wars show had moved on from.

The Mandalorian’s Side-Quests Are Killing Its Momentum

Tragically, The Mandalorian season 3, episode 6 massively kills the momentum and goodwill that had been established prior with Bo-Katan’s ongoing evolution as someone who could come to rule Mandalore again as she once did during the Empire’s reign. While she is granted the Darksaber by Djarin, who reveals she earned it by saving his life on Mandalore, the moment is undercut by the bizarre adventure they just had with a droid conspiracy that was wholly unnecessary for the show overall. Although it’s not the first “side-quest” to be seen in the series or even in The Mandalorian season 3, the mission on Plazir-15 is absolutely the worst one yet.

It’s Time To Get Back To Mandalore

The silver lining is that Bo-Katan has finally become the wielder of the Darksaber again. This means she now has the authority to back up her mission given by the Armorer, who now believes all Mandalorians must be united as one, regardless of their clans or creeds. After all, Bo-Katan bore witness to a Mythosaur in the Living Waters, a major sign from an ancient prophecy claiming that the return of the extinct beast would herald a new age for Mandalore and its people. As such, the hope would be that the Mandalorians will attempt to reclaim their homeworld by the season’s end.

With only two episodes left in The Mandalorian season 3, there really can’t be another chapter like episode 6. Compared to the rest of the season thus far, it sticks out like a sore thumb and provides very little to the overarching narrative regarding the reclamation of Mandalore. Likewise, one could certainly argue that the season should have already returned to the planet by now. That being said, the odds are strong that The Mandalorian season 3 will get back on track now that Bo-Katan is where she needs to be to unite all Mandalorians under one banner before they head to take back Mandalore itself.
