NEW DELHI: An NIA special court on Wednesday sentenced Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik to life imprisonment. He had earlier pleaded guilty to all charges, including those under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), in a terror funding case.
Special judge Praveen Singh had on May 19 convicted Malik and directed National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials to assess his financial situation to further determine the amount of fine likely to be imposed.

On May 10, Malik had told the court that he was not contesting the charges levelled against him that including Section 16 (terrorist act), 17 (raising funds for the terrorist act), 18 (conspiracy to commit terrorist act) and 20 (being a member of terrorist gang or organisation) of the UAPA and sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 124-A (sedition) of the IPC.

The National Investigation Agency urged the court to give the death penalty to Yasin Malik, a separatist leader from Jammu and Kashmir while the latter said that will not beg for anything and left the decision on court.
The lawyer who attended the court proceeding said, in the courtroom, “Yasin said that if I have been involved in any terrorist activity or violence in 28 years, if Indian Intelligence proves this, then I will also retire from politics. I will accept the hanging. With seven Prime Ministers, I have worked.”
On the demand by NIA for the death penalty to the separatist leader, he said, “I will not beg for anything. The case is before this court and I left on the court to decide it.”
Parts of Srinagar observe shutdown
Parts of Srinagar observed a spontaneous shutdown on Wednesday ahead of a court’s verdict on the quantum of sentence for separatist Yasin Malik, who has been convicted in a terror funding case, officials said.
Most of the shops and business establishments in Maisuma and adjoining areas, including some shops in Lal Chowk, were shut, they said.
Shops in some areas of the old city here were also shut, however, public transport was plying normally, they added.
Security forces have been deployed in strength in the city to avoid any law and order problems, they said.
