Keep growing the world of Yellowstone: with 1923 the series – or rather, the saga – created by Taylor Sheridan adds a new prequel chapter and continues to provide the public with all the ingredients of this western universe. Available from February 12 on Paramount+this new production is temporally placed in the middle between the previous spin-off 1883, which chronicled how the Dutton family arrived at the famous ranch, and the main series set in the present day. Beyond the broader connections, though, there’s an intrinsic reason to see 1923actually two: Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford who, returned to act together after Mosquito Coast from 1986, eat up the limelight with each of their appearances.
The two sacred monsters of Hollywood juggle the sea of calamity and violence which seems to envelop the Dutton family forever and ever: “I’ve been here since 1894 and I can’t remember a year that has been easy”, says Ford’s character in the first episode. And in fact, from the very first scenes we see gun chases, locust invasion (literally), diseases affecting livestock, and so on. Ford plays here Jacob Duttonbrother of the James Dutton (Tim McGraw) at center of 1883: married with Darling (Mirren)a wise yet action-packed matriarch, the two raised as if they were James’s children, John Sr. (interpreted by James Badge and grandfather of the John Dutton III that Kevin Costner plays in Yellowstone), remained to help out on the family ranch, e Spencer (Brandon Sklenar)a veteran of World War I who tries to recover from that horror by hunting big cats in Africa.
The various members of the family, as we hear in the prologue, not only always manage to escape from the others threats, but they also seem to always attract new ones. The rest of the series begins with Jacob himself being threatened by Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynnthe Bronn of game of Thrones), at the head of shepherds who want to take advantage at the expense of their neighbors, and with a tough fight against various disasters that threaten the livestock and crops of the montana. However, there are also other stories that appear in this dense plot, and not the most trivial compared to the usual Far West clichés: let’s see for example Teonna Rainwater (Aminah Nieves)a young Native American who is oppressed in a parochial school by the cruel Sister Mary (Jennifer Ehle), or we witness the troubled love story between Jack Dutton (Darren Mann)son of John Sr., and betrothed Elizabeth (Michelle Randolph)to which Cara is forced to teach a hard lesson: “There is no doubt which is more important, between marriage and livestock. It’s always the cattle”.
