In late May, Google Authenticator received its first update which mainly included a new feature: the ability to hide your 2FA codes (two-factor authentication) until the button was pressed “Click to reveal”. Now, the Mountain View giant seems to have changed its mind. In fact, with an update released this week removed the option which made it possible to immediately view every single access code generated.
In detail, the version 5.20 R4 the app no longer offers this possibility which, in the original intentions of the company, should have helped the software to reach a higher level of security. However, with the generated codes changing every 30 seconds, it did not prove to be very comfortable as a functionality. The update, however, available for Androidwas not released for iOS which, however, has an excellent option, namely that of authenticate through Face / Touch ID before showing the codes. In this regard, it could be a good move to “move” it in the Android world as well.
Finally, again on the update, no other news worthy of note are included. In fact, in the Play Store notes on the app – among the best for two-factor authentication since you can only receive access codes within the app – it is exclusively indicated that “Device encryption has been added for storing secret values.” In short, Google, after having received feedback from users in case, he decided to retrace his steps and remove a function implemented less than two months ago.
