970,000 fewer subscribers in the quarter ended June 30th. This is one of the most relevant data of the latest fiscal balance of the streaming giant. It is the largest loss of subscribers ever recorded in a quarter – in the previous one they were “only” 200,000 – but it is still a figure below the official estimates of Netflix which had projected up to 2 million fewer subscribers.
In the second quarter of the year, the number of subscribers was equal to 220.67 million and now there‘The company expects to be able to add another million during the third quartera sign of a positive change in the number of subscriptions.
Despite the minus sign in the number of subscribers, Netflix’s balance sheet is in excellent health with a + 9% revenue in the period in question compared to the previous year. Password sharing, strong competition and the uncertainties that characterize the macroeconomic situation are the factors that, according to Netflix, have slowed growth.
To capture new subscribers you need content and on this front Netflix has many aces to play: one of the most recent is the fourth season of Stranger Things which started very strong: with its over 1.3 billion hours of viewing accumulated (for now) it is Netflix’s most viewed English-language TV series to date. The Company is also working to expand the number of subscribers with the often mentioned subscription with advertising that could allow to reduce the price of the service (see the recent collaboration with Microsoft) and is testing new solutions to counter the phenomenon of sharing without limits on the password for accessing the platform.
