Snapdragon Summit, Qualcomm confirms the dates: new generation in November

The rumors of the past few weeks have been confirmed thanks to an official announcement: Qualcomm has confirmed that it is Snapdragon Summit 2022 will be held in half of Novembermore precisely from the 15 to 17.

The first indication on the possible dates emerged on the occasion of the publication of a Qualcomm event calendar that indicated the dates of November 14-17, which perfectly reflect those actually chosen for the event. Obviously there is a small discrepancy regarding the day of November 14th, however this is not surprising as it is not strange to think that the first day will be dedicated to some sessions for the insiders before the opening of the actual Summit.

This will be the occasion in which Qualcomm will officially announce the new generation of Snapdragon, introducing what is currently called Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (and there are no reasons to think of a different acronym), or the very high-end SoC that we will find on the main smartphones and tablets of 2023.

Recall that the key details of the new chip – also known as SM8550 – include the transition to a new architecture that it will include a Cortex-X3 core flanked by 2 Cortex-A720in turn supported by 2 Cortex-A710 and from 3 Cortex-A510. As you can see, Qualcomm may have chosen a configuration with 4 different clusters that should divide the various tasks during the normal operation of the device.

The new architecture also features several points of contact with the current one, as the Cortex-A710 and A510 cores will make their return, while Cortex-X3 and A720 cores will guarantee the generational leapquantified in a performance increase of approximately 30% compared to the top-of-the-range solutions of 2022. There should be no news on the production process front, since it should be 4 nm of TSMC.

In short, the new generation of chips is not that far away and this year it will also arrive quite early. Although Qualcomm has gradually moved its events closer and closer to the beginning of December, in this round we are seeing an advance of the times with the mid-November event. Is it therefore possible that the first devices with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 can arrive – even in the West – already within the year? For this and other details we will have to wait a few more months.
