There is no peace for Apple in Russia: according to the antitrust, the Cupertino company has violated national regulations, abusing its dominant position in the app store sector and will be sanctioned for this. The news comes a few days after the other fine imposed on Apple for the methods of managing Russian citizens’ data in iCloud.

According to the assessments of the Russian authority, Apple prohibits iOS developers from providing customers with in-app information about the ability to pay for purchases outside the App Store or to use alternative payment methods. As reported by Reuters, the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) has confirmed that it will apply a fine to Apple based on App Store revenue. The exact entity will be determined in the context of an administrative investigation.

If the reasons for the investigation are familiar it is because they are the same at the basis of the proceedings initiated in other markets by antitrust authorities and companies against Apple – see the case in the Netherlands and before that the articulated controversy with Epic.

The difference specifically is that the action is being carried out in Russia which, since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, has made relations with large Western companies even more tense. It is therefore difficult to determine how much of the interventions of the local authorities is to be considered as a form of revenge: it should be remembered that Apple for its part prevents the use of Apple Pay in Russia and has stopped the sale of its products in the country.

There are those who (Reuters) underline that the new fine is another attempt by the Kremlin to exercise greater control over online spacesWhy Moscow hit the Western company with a series of fines for violating Internet laws. Whatever the interpretation, the objective fact is that Russia in recent times has intensified the sanctioning interventions against Western big techs from those directed at Google (see fine for YouTube videos), to arrive at actions against Twitch, Airbnb and Pinterest.
