It is not the first time that Samyang introduces renewed optics to improve some of the specifications of previous versions. Something similar has already happened with the 14 mm f / 2.8 or with the 85 mm f / 1.4 (version with manual focus) but also with the more classic 50 mm f / 1.4 (again for Sony E and with automatic fire) which was renewed at the end of last year. Now the 85mm f / 1.4 is added to the list.
The characteristics of the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE II
As reported from the Asian manufacturer this new model was designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Samyang. For this, as written above, a whole series of objectives have been announced “second generation” including the85 mm f / 1.4. In particular, the company then focused on resolution in the central area thanks to a renovated structure.
The optical design of the Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE II it includes 11 elements divided into 8 groups. Among these we find four high refraction lenses and a very low dispersion lens that allow you to have a contrast and higher resolution. Even the coating (UMC) makes its contribution to the overall quality while maintaining excellent sharpness in low light conditions. The manufacturer explained that there are no aspherical lenses which, while on the one hand improve optical performance, on the other hand have an impact on the bokeh (and Samyang decided to favor the latter).
Among the novelties of this lens there is also the faster, more precise and silent focusing thanks to the linear stepping motor (STM) that allows you to move the elements even in particular conditions (such as the tracking of the subjects). Obviously Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE II it is compatible with advanced features of Sony cameras.
On the body there is the focus lock button (and can be assigned the Eye-AF function) and a customizable button that can manage the aperture or other functions according to what the user needs. The design includes a rubberized focus ring and does not lack resistance to water, dust and snow.
The minimum focusing distance is 85 cm. The diaphragmconsisting of 9 blades, has an opening ranging from f / 1.4 at f / 16. At the front, 72 mm filters can be installed while the dimensions are 99.5 x 83.4 mm while the weight reaches 509 grams. The price of the new Samyang AF 85mm F1.4 FE II is equal to 799 dollars.
