Facebook is losing more and more ground among young people and today, according to the data of the latest report of the Pew research center, only a third of teenagers in the United States it uses the social network of Mark Zuckerberg, after reaching its maximum diffusion in 2015, with 71%, and having suffered a first decline in 2018, reaching only 51%. Among adolescents in particular, YouTube usage has increased by 10% in three years, from 85% in 2018 to 95% in 2021.

As for the more traditionally “social” applications, compared to YouTube, the new report confirmed how TikTok is surpassing all others, quickly becoming the reigning champion of teenagers. 67% of young people interviewed said they used the platform and 16% said they were “almost constantly” on TikTok. Instagram and Snapchat follow closely, with 62% and 59% of teens confirming they are using these platforms, respectively.

The percentages of Instagram and Snapchat are up since the survey of the 2014-2015 (respectively at 51% and 41%), but in sharp decline compared to the data of 2018. Four years ago, Pew reported that 72% of teenagers surveyed used Instagram and 69% Snapchat. However, in his latest study, Pew pointed out that the survey methods used today are different from those of 2018 and therefore “It is not possible to make direct comparisons between the two investigations due to the differences in the ways in which they were conducted”. Looking at other platforms instead, there is a large gap that separates them from those listed so far. Only 23% of teens use Twitter, 20% Twitch, 17% WhatsApp, 14% Reddit and only 5% use Tumblr. While two other platforms monitored by Pew, namely Vine and Google+, no longer exist.

In addition to recording Facebook’s continued decline in popularity and new trends, the Pew report found other broader trends in young people’s Internet use. For instance, 97% of teens said they use the internet on a daily basis and nearly half said they were online “almost constantly”. These values ​​are both up from previous Pew reports, and over a third of teens said they were “almost constantly” on one of the top five online platforms.

The data also indicate differences in internet and social media use depending on the gender, ethnicity and income level. Boys, for example, are more likely to use YouTube, Twitch, and Reddit (all popular for gamers), while girls said they are more often on TikTok, Instagram, and Snapchat. Afro-descendant and Hispanic teenagers appear to be on the Internet more frequently than their Caucasian counterparts. While use “constant” of the Internet has been recorded more frequently among adolescents living in families with an annual income of between $ 30,000 and $ 75,000.
