Bringing man to Mars is a fascinating challenge, which in recent years has become increasingly discussed, the subject of promises and hypotheses on what it would mean to reach the Red Planet and then explore it. Certainly, when a human being were to set foot on it, he would need structures capable of hosting him: among projects and life experiments on Mars, there is also the house designed and built by Hugh Broughton Architects, a studio specialized in construction of research stations in the most remote places on Earth that he created a housing unit equipped with some ad hoc solutions, which will be exhibited and open to visitors in the city of Bristol, England, from 31 August to 30 October 2022.
The small house measures 53 square meters and is designed to be entirely powered by solar panels, characterized by a structure capable of withstanding extreme wind, temperature and radiation conditions. The floor would be installed directly on the ground, filled with the soil of Mars to create an insulating layer. The walls and ceiling, on the other hand, are inflatable and create a pressurized environment, isolated from the outside by a sheet made by a specialized company.
Inside there is space for a space designed for hydroponic cultivation – therefore not in the ground but in special aqueous solutions – of plants, which would have the dual purpose of making the house more livable and completing the diet of the occupants. In addition there are obviously some control systems, two sleeping bunks, a shower and a toilet designed by the Duravit company. Many of the objects and furnishings necessary for everyday life are still under study and the initiative will also serve to collect ideas and feedback, but the premise is that everything that will be contained within this space can be easy to use and repair, multipurpose and will not create unnecessary waste that is then impossible to dispose of on Mars.
Waiting to see other similar projects, which certainly will not fail, in the immediate future it seems that the challenge between powers passes from the collection of samples from the red planet, with China that could anticipate ESA and NASA through an ambitious recovery project.
