One is coming virtual version of Dungeons & Dragons: Wizards of the Coast, the publisher who currently holds the official rights to the hugely popular fantasy RPG, just presented it. To clarify, it will not be a video game inspired by the setting or the system, such as Baldur’s Gate or Neverwinter Nights, but a virtual recreation of the board game. The masters will be able to create three-dimensional environments and insert all the appropriate thumbnails, which will be able to move exactly as in the real world. There will of course also be the characters, which can be customized in various ways.

D&D Digital will be built with the very recent Unreal Engine 5, and promises first-rate graphics quality; the experience will include some goodies like virtual dice roll, character health bar above their avatars, and most importantly a automatic movement meter, a major cause of arguments during a game. The virtual table will be framed entirely with the Tilt-Shift technique, in which only the central part is perfectly in focus. Helps to reinforce the feeling of interacting with small objects.

WoTC will distribute several virtual content packs, with 3D settings and pre-packaged campaigns that users can then reuse, customize and integrate into their own personalized campaigns. Additionally, it has already been confirmed that it will be compatible with D&D Beyond’s digital creative tools.

Development of D&D Digital has just begun and its release may take some time yet. It could come out with the next big update of the regulation, scheduled for 2024. At the moment we don’t have concrete details on technical requirements, compatible platforms and so on. The initiative was briefly mentioned during the Wizard Presents streaming event, which touches on many topics; you can watch him in his interest in the video below.
