For weeks, videos of people suffering from flu-like symptoms immediately after returning from vacation. On TikTokmany guys show themselves cooled downin physical condition not good and with thermometers that record fever over 38 ° C.

Phrases and comments that allude to the alleged are not uncommon on social media danger of some well-known tourist resorts, often associated with this ailment. To have attracted attention more than other seaside destinations is first of all the very popular Gallipolibut also young people had similar symptoms upon returning from Riccionefrom Page in Croatia and from Corfu in Greece. In short, apparently it would seem to be a viral or bacterial infectionbut at the moment it is struggling to understand what the origin is, given that all the hypotheses put forward so far have some inconsistencies or at least leave gray areas that require more in-depth analysis.

An epidemiology still uncertain (and nothing transpires from the official data)

Since the first to report the accumulation of cases on TikTok were young – often just over 18 – there are those who hypothesize that the age group around 18-20 years is the one most at risk. However, for now, it is difficult to establish it in such a way scientifically and statistically solid: it could simply be the effect of the greater propensity of certain age groups to share such information on social networks, and up to the eventual arrival of a full epidemiological evaluation it is little more than bar chat.

The most frequently cited symptoms are Red eyes, exhaustion, fever, cold, cough And sore throatand in most cases people who have experienced these symptoms after returning from vacation declare that they have been cured with simple over-the-counter medications, claiming to have had a good recovery within a few days. However, what is shown is the number of hospital admissions or access to the emergency room it has not undergone a significant increase, either among young people or in the general population, suggesting that the phenomenon is relatively small or that at least it does not involve a significant frequency of relevant complications.

The hypotheses on the virus and the damage to image

On social networks the news also in this case spread quickly, so much so that the alarm for an alleged health risk frightened some tourists, worried about the possible presence of a bacterium or a virus in a part of the waters of the Apulian coast. For now there are no certainties onorigin of the diseasebut there seem to be some factors that unite all people who have suffered from the symptoms: age, location and type of health problems encountered.

One of the first hypotheses that emerged is – obviously – that it was the Sars-Cov-2 virus, but almost all the protagonists of the videos underwent the swab recording (at least according to what was declared) a negative result. It was then thought to a new viral variantperhaps not detectable by the best-selling tampons in pharmacies, but this hypothesis (as well as that of a new virus, different from Sars-Cov-2) would not justify why the cases seem to come only from few specific tourist locations, rather than from the whole territory. It could be a temporary issue due to holidays, of course, but at the moment the data does not allow us to know more.
