Wherever there is a lens there can be the interest of Leica. In this case the lens is that of a UST projector (Ultra Short Throw – Ultra Short Throw), which we were able to see live in the halls of the Berlin fair during IFA 2022: Leica Cine 1.

At the moment it is a product under development and based on solutions Hisense LaserTV. In particular we are dealing with a product with RGB laser sourcepresent in the Hisense range with the nickname of TriChroma.

I spoke to the technicians at the Leica stand and currently it is a product to test the ground and understand the possible commercial space of a Leica branded solution. The product present at the stand, in fact, only saw an external customization, while all the technological heart (laser source, DLP chip and optics) are Hisense manufacturing, complete with the presence on board also of the Vidaa 6.0 smart operating system. As with the Hisense LaserTVs, it will be one all-in-one solution ready to use, with onboard audio, TV tuner and various connections, Wi-Fi included.

Leica’s plans are to market the product in the second quarter of 2023 It is currently German technicians are working on customized optics. It will be interesting to see the results, given that a lot is expected of a name like Leica. There is already an interesting clue, as the projector is indicated as suitable for projections’up to 100 inches‘: at the moment Hisense solutions have fixed optics, each model has a predetermined distance from the projection surface and consequently an equally fixed screen size. The Leica solution could instead take advantage of a variable focal and focus optics, playing the adaptability card.

From an aesthetic point of view, the German designers have done a very good job and live the projector much more beautiful than the Chinese counterpart, with better possibilities to integrate into a European-style home.
