It took years of investment and on occasion even bitter morsels, but it seems that together, Samsung’s Exynos chips are finally growing to a pace more similar to the expectations of the company. To put it in black and white are the analysts of Omdia, who in their report on the second quarter of 2022 underline the market share close to the double digits of the chips made in Seoul (7.8% from 4.8% in Q1), thanks to the growing sales of SoCs for medium-low range smartphones.
In fact, the Exynos are not only used by Samsung for the Galaxy. Of course, a significant contribution obviously comes from the sales of cheap Galaxy, but part of the credit is to be attributed to other manufacturers who, especially in eastern or emerging markets, entrust Samsung’s Exynos with the balance between performance, efficiency and costs of their entry level models. Excluding the top-of-the-range smartphones, where Samsung still doesn’t “run” well, the comparison between the first and second quarter of the year which closed in June is rosy: 22.8 million Exynos shipped from factories, + 53%.
The main competitor on the low-end, MediaTekas well as the main player in the world as regards chips, is defeated by the comparison between the first and second quarter, where however the numbers remain higher than those of Samsung despite the decline: -9.6%, with 100.1 million chips shipped. No smiles even for Qualcomm and Apple, whose negative signs are obviously linked to those of a gasping market: Qualcomm goes down 4% with 64 million chips shipped, Apple by 13.3% with 48.9 million (although at least part of Apple’s decline can be explained by the approaching launch of the new iPhones).
Analysts report that among the most popular Samsung chips there are Exynos 850 and Exynos 1080, used on Galaxy A13 (the first) and Galaxy A33 5G and Galaxy A53 5G (the second), and will also be low and medium-low-end chips but Samsung has not skimped on the production process, the parameter that, simplifying, gives us a idea of the relationship between performance and efficiency: 8 nanometers the first, even 5 nanometers the second.
