ESA has made official a news that we all hoped to read and concerns our Samantha Cristoforetti, currently engaged as a Mission Specialist for the crew of the Crew-4, who has been stationed on the ISS since the end of April. In 2021, his possible leadership role for Expedition 68 was aired, but then a different choice was made. Now the moment of her glory has finally arrived and in fact it is for the whole of our country and for women in the first place.
AstroSamantha will be the next commander of the International Space Station taking over from Expedition 67’s crew mate, Oleg Artemyev.
Since the beginning of her last mission on the ISS, called Minerva, Samantha has been in charge of the United States Orbital Segment (USOS) and has assumed the role of supervisor of activities in the US, European, Japanese and Canadian modules of the Station. The new role is formally called ‘Commander of the crew of the International Space Station’ and is decided internationally by all partners participating in the activities on the ISS. The positions of command are therefore assigned on the basis of the joint decisions of NASA (United States), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe) and CSA (Canada).
Now that her role has been made official, Samantha will become the fifth European commander of the Space Station, following in the footsteps of former ESA astronauts Frank De Winne, Alexander Gerst, Luca Parmitano and Thomas Pesquet. But most of all she will be the first European woman to fill this position. Here are the words of him hot.
“I am honored to be appointed commander and look forward to drawing on the experience I have gained in space and on Earth to lead a very capable team into orbit.”
The role of commander will become official after the traditional handover ceremony which, as usual, sees the symbolic passage of a key from the current commander to the new one. The event will be held on Wednesday 28 September 2022 and it will be possible to follow it live thanks to ESA Web TV, which will broadcast a live streaming. We will update you on the starting time of the ceremony.
