In an experiment carried out at Berlin on the day of last September 7, LG managed to transmit data at 320 meters inside the band between 155 and 175 GHzthe so-called teraherz frequencies (Thz). This is a record, which eclipses the previous milestone of the 100 meterscarried out within the first experiments on 6G networks of the future.


In order to reach the distance a multi-channel power amplifier with 20 dBm (100 mW) output, 5 dBm more powerful than the amplifiers underlying the previous 6G tests. The goal of LG, as well as of all operators who want to establish 6G networks, is to cover a radius of 250 meters through the new frequencies, which will allow you to touch transmission speeds in the order of Terabit / si.e. 1,000 Gbit / s.

Sending broadcasts on these frequency bands, however, involves a number of tradeoffs to signal integrity, as they are very susceptible to atmospheric obstructions and electromagnetic radiation.


6G networks should take advantage of the Terahertz frequency range (0.1 Thz 3 Thz)the only region of the electromagnetic spectrum not exploited from the technological point of view, but to which a decidedly important potential is recognized.


These electromagnetic waves, defined “terahertz wavesof type sub millimeter because they have a length between 0.01 and 1 millimeters, they are placed in the radio spectrum between microwaves and infrared. To date, however, a method to be able to transmit them over long distances has not been tested, which is why the successful LG test represents a significant step forward.


Discussions on the standardization of the 6G network are expected to begin around 2025, with the commercialization of the technology planned for 2029. Compared to 5G wireless networks, 6G will provide much better data transfer rates with lower latency and higher reliability. More details can be found in the LG’s press release.
