Now that the new Chromecast model with Google TV has been unveiled, there is also the news that two of the models previously on the market will come out of the catalog. Recall that at the debut the Chromecast was simply a very cheap accessory for streaming from smartphone to TV, which did not require other applications or a remote control, but now we are going to close that era and even the third generation together with the Ultra version are about to leave the markets.
Google would have confirmed this to 9toGoogle, source of this news, confirming however that the purchase will be possible while stocks last. Apparently the official Google store does not list them anymore and only the partner stores seem to be in possession of the latest units, however the decision to delete the old version is not too surprising.
The new version with Google TV and maximum resolution of 1080p offers at the same price all the same features as the third generation, such as streaming content from smartphones, use in speaker groups and more, plus the device powered by Google TV it also has an Android-based operating system that allows for app installation and uses a remote for controls instead of relying solely on a smartphone (usable as an option anyway). In Italy the price is 10 euros higher than the old version, however the advantages are considerable, so much so that the old model is superfluous.
Google has specified that it will continue to offer software support to the discontinued model, but there is no precise timeline in this regard. To be clear, even the original 2013 Chromecast continues to receive minor updates (bug fixes and various fixes), so if we consider that about four years have passed since the third generation was marketed, it is reasonable to expect a few more years of support with updates.
