Microsoft presented the results of the Work Trend Index 2022, research aimed at identifying and understanding the trends that characterize the world of work. The title of this edition of the research, which also examines the situation in Italy, is “Great Expectations: Making Work Work”, To underline how companies must find new ways to stimulate and incentivize workers in a world where hybrid work has now become the norm.
What emerges is a certain deviation between the expectations of the workers and the visions of the managers. If the former are more and more inclined to work remotely, even if not every day, the managers hope for a return to the classic face-to-face mode in a short time.
The new values of workers
Microsoft’s analysis is based on a survey carried out on a sample of 31,000 people in 31 countries, including Italy, and it also includes data resulting from the analysis of the obtained data from Microsoft 365 tools and job trends on LinkedIn.
The first fact that stands out, and in part also the most predictable, are the new priorities of Italian workers, less and less willing to make too many sacrifices for work. Today in the first place there are health and well-being, so much so that an important percentage of the interviewees (37% in Italy, 41% worldwide) workers declares that will probably consider a new job in the next year. If we limit ourselves to looking at the younger groups, Gen Z and Millennials, in Italy the percentage grows further, reaching 49%. In practice, one in two. An increase compared to the previous Work Trend Index.
According to Microsoft, in short, the phenomenon of “great resignations” has not ended. It should also be said that in the report the Redmond giant does not use the term “great resignation”, but prefers “Great Reshuffle”, the great reorganization.
Executives want employees to return to the company: the role of managers
While hybrid work has yielded positive results, often helping to improve worker productivity and happiness, Italian executives don’t seem to like it. And just under half (47%) hopes for a full return to attendance. On the contrary, 41% of employees say they prefer the flexibility guaranteed by hybrid forms of work. Between the two figures are the managers, who are between the hammer and the anvil: 56% of the managerial figures admit a significant difference between the views of the management and the expectations of the employees. 71% of them say they want to have more leeway to manage teams.
One sobering aspect is that beyond expectations, employees are wondering why they need to return to the office. One in three (33%) does not find valid reasons. Really, 46% of Italians declare that they also intend to exploit new collaboration technologies, such as virtual workspaces in the metaverse.
The executives, however, do not want to hear us from this ear: only 27%, in Italy, have already made agreements with the workforce to define the methods of hybrid work.
Microsoft 365 data analytics
As already mentioned, remote and hybrid work has made it possible to increase productivity, sometimes even at the expense of employees’ free time. As you can easily guess, the data shows an increase in time spent in meetings on Teams: since 2020, they have grown by 252%. Not only during working hours, however: the data show an increase in work outside the usual office hours and also on weekends.
According to Microsoft, if on the one hand it is positive that employees have increased their commitment, on the other hand there is the need to introduce new rules in the company to better regulate hybrid work: one thing is to be flexible, another to guarantee total availability. .
“The lived experience and the impact that the last two years will continue to have on the labor market cannot be erased, as flexibility and well-being have become non-negotiable elements for employees“, he claims Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President, Modern Work, Microsoft. “By welcoming and responding proactively to these new expectations, companies have the opportunity to rethink their business setting and the role of employees to achieve long-term success goals.“.
