Your next office? It could be 3D printed! Here is the STRABAG one in Austria

In Italy we were pioneers on the subject and WASP was already talking about 3D printed houses at the Maker Faire many years ago. In the meantime, several other companies globally have taken an interest in the topic and projects that exploit the technologies of 3D printing to create houses with alternative methods to traditional construction.

3D printed houses: even the construction giants throw themselves into it

In reality, the large building realities are taking an interest in these alternative methods and therefore worthy of note is a project that sees the collaboration of construction giant STRABAGan Austrian company that deals with building infrastructures such as bridges, highways, but also hospitals.

The project we are talking about today was born from the collaboration between STRABAG, FOR THE (one of the world’s largest manufacturers of formwork and scaffolding) and the German architecture firm Mense-Korte Achitects. It is a office of 125 square metersprinted in Austria in 45 hours taking advantage of the COBOD BOD2 3D printer. COBOD a Danish company that deals with the production of construction 3D printers.

The new structure is an expansion of the offices of the STRABAG headquarters in Hausleiten, a plant that deals with the mixture of asphalts. For 3D printing of the office was used dry mortarwhich was deposited in layers to form three walls. The cavity that remained between the inner and outer ones was then filled with concrete to give solidity to the structurewhile the outermost cavity was filled with heat-insulating materials.

The 3D printer designed to operate autonomously in-situ, with silos for the supply of materials and lines for the supply of electricity and water, which is mixed with the mortar before it is deposited with the print head.

It is a construction technique that expands the possibilities of prefabricated buildings and that provides great flexibility in terms of the shapes that can be obtained, an added value to make the most of the creativity of architectural firms.
