From today 30 September some new rules for electric scooters come into effect. For the new models, in fact, take theobligation to have arrows and a double brake.

This decree enters into force on the fifteenth day following its publication in the Official Journal of the Italian Republic. It is mandatory to apply to all new electric scooters marketed in Italy from 30 September 2022.

However, there are also news for scooters already in circulation. In fact, they will have to adapt by January 1, 2024.

Electric scooters already in circulation in Italy before 30 September 2022 must be adjusted, as regards the presence of the turn indicators and the braking system on both wheels, by 1 January 2024, pursuant to art. 1 paragraph 75-bis of law no. 160 of 27 December 2019.

For the adaptation, the owners of an electric scooter will have to use a specially provided kit for your model.

In this case, users are obliged to comply with the aforementioned requirements, using kits specifically provided for their scooter. The aforementioned kits must guarantee the maintenance of compliance with directive no. 2006/42 / EC to which electric scooters must comply.

Let’s go into the details of the new technical obligations that came into force starting today. Let’s start with the braking system which will have to act on both wheels to ensure better safety. This is exactly what the legislation provides.

Electric scooters must have brakes on both wheels. The braking device must be independent for each axle and must be such as to act promptly and effectively on the respective wheels. The independent braking devices, one on the front wheel and the other on the rear, can act on the wheel (tire or rim) or on the hub, or, in general, on the transmission components.

As mentioned, what is written is only valid for new scooters but from 1 January 2024 it will also be valid for vehicles already in circulation. Now we come to the direction indicators. The specific legislation in detail also the characteristics they must satisfy.

The turn indicators must be amber in color. Flashing must occur at a frequency of f = 1.5 ± 0.5 Hz with a pulse duration greater than 0.3 s, measured at 95% of the maximum luminous intensity. These indicators must be placed both in front and rear position with respect to the driver and symmetrically to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, at a height between a minimum of 150 mm and a maximum of 1400 mm from the ground. If they are positioned in such a way that they are visible both from the front and from the rear (for example on the handlebar), only two turn indicators are sufficient. The other characteristics of the turn indicators must comply with the provisions of art. 224 of the regulation implementing the new highway code but with an intensity of the light emitted not less than 0.3 candles in the application of paragraph 5 of art. 224.
