In Italy, electric buses they increased by 53% in just over a year, hybrid ones, on the other hand, by 41%. These interesting data that show that in Italy the green renewal of the fleet of vehicles for local public transport is progressing positively, comes from a study by the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility (Mims).

The quarterly monitoring launched in mid-2021 on the evolution of the bus fleet (approximately 43,000 vehicles) shows how, with the exit from circulation of Euro 1 class diesel vehicles from June 2022 (as required by law no. 156 of 9 November 2021 ), the share of Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles on the total of diesel vehicles rose to 61.5% (it was 55.9% in July 2021). This trend is destined to be confirmed in the near future with the decommissioning of the Euro 2 vehicles by the end of this year and of the Euro 3 by January 1, 2024.

Therefore, between July 2021 and September 2022 the number of electric vehicles grew by 53%, from 406 to 621 units, with a sharp increase (+94 units) in the last quarter. Hybrid vehicles, on the other hand, they increased by 41% (from 466 to 659 units) in the period July 2021 – September 2022, with an increase of 40 units in the last quarter. We recall that starting from 2015 the funds assigned for the renewal of the fleet through instruments such as ordinary funds, the National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Mobility (PSNMS), the PNRR, the Complementary Fund and the REPowerEU plan totaled 7.5 billion EUR.

According to the data communicated, Lombardy and Piedmont are leading the transition towards zero emission local public transport with 196 and 109 electric buses circulating in September 2022.

In Valle d’Aosta, Friuli-Venezia-Giulia, Umbria and Lazio the share of Euro 6 buses is very high (over 49%), while the most polluting means (Euro 2-3) represent more than 50% of those in circulation in Molise and Basilicata, and between 40% and 50% of those circulating in Veneto, Calabria, Abruzzo, Sicily, Umbria and Tuscany.

The average age of vehicles in September 2022 is 10.3 years. In July 2021 it was 10.6 years. There are, however, strong differences at the territorial level. In fact, between July 2021 and September 2022 Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Veneto and Basilicata greatly reduced the average age of their fleet, while Molise and Sicily saw an increase, albeit limited.

However, the Ministry highlights that these data do not yet consider the positive effects from the orders formalized in recent months and from those that will derive from the use of the resources allocated by Mims to local authorities under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr), on the Complementary National Plan (Pnc) and on the ordinary budget of the Ministry, for a total of over 3.5 billion euros in the two-year period 2021-2022.

In particular, 1,466 vehicles have been ordered or pre-ordered since January 2022 (of which 411 through the Extra-urban Bus Framework Agreement, 617 through the Urban Bus Framework Agreement and 438 through the CNG Bus Framework Agreement) which will replace the most pollutants.

Furthermore, it should be noted that on 27 October 2022 the tender for the supply of 1,000 electric buses with plug-in and pantograph charging technology will be published on the Consip platform, which will allow local authorities to acquire the vehicles using the resources provided for by the NRP.

Finally, the Ministry points out that the buses registered to Flixbus and Itabus and some other companies, not providing local public transport service, have been excluded from the report.
