The founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange was selected as one of the three finalists of the prestigious Sakharov prize for freedom of thought, awarded annually by the Parliament of the European Union. The Sakharov Prize is an honorary award given to an individual or group who has dedicated his life to the defense of human rights. The winner will be announced on October 19th. Stella Assange, wife of Julian Assange, protagonist of the Wired Next Fest in Milan dedicated to the future of democracy, will speak at the plenary of the European Parliament next week in view of the final decision.

The Sakharov Prize
The Sakharov Prize was first awarded in 1988 and, in the past, has been awarded to other personalities while imprisoned, such as Nelson Mandelajust in 1988 and Alexei Navalny in 2021. This year’s winner or winner will be announced on 19 October 2022 and the awards ceremony will take place in Strasbourg on 14 December.
