A rebel coup is bubbling within the Conservative Party as members discuss whether Ms Truss should be ousted as leader.
The dramatic shift in mood comes after a disastrous meeting with the 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers on Wednesday night.
ConservativeHome editor Paul Goodman told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “One idea doing the rounds is that Penny Mordaunt and Rishi Sunak, who, after all, between them got pretty much two-thirds of the votes of MPs, come to some kind of arrangement and essentially take over.”
Foreign Secretary James Cleverly warned Tory MPs that any attempt to replace Liz Truss as Prime Minister would be a “disastrously bad idea”.
The turbulence comes as Ms Truss faces serious opposition to the mini-budget announced by Kwasi Kwarteng, which has already resulted in a U-turn on cutting tax for the highest earners.
While Downing Street is publicly insistent there will be no further U-turns on the budget, reports are surfacing that Ms Truss could be preparing to change major aspects of her tax plans to ease the concerns of her backbenchers.
