OVHcloud announced the development of a new technique of immersion liquid cooling hybrid type. The company intends to exploit it within its data centers to improve the cooling performance of servers while also limiting consumption and, therefore, also expenses.
OVHcloud announces a new immersion liquid cooling technique

The new technique, which was developed internally by OVHcloud and led to the filing of 16 patents, involves the use of bookcase rack cabinets in which the servers are arranged vertically, rather than horizontally as is normally the case. Each cabinet has three levels, for a total capacity of 48 servers in 1U format or 24 in 2U format. Each server is isolated from the others and immersed in its own independent tank.
The servers are completely immersed in a dielectric liquid (which therefore conducts heat but not electricity) which is directly in contact with all the components; passive heatsinks with a coil specially designed to facilitate the dispersion of heat in the liquid are installed on the CPU and GPU.
Among the advantages of this approach is the fact that there are no more fans or pumps inside the rack, which is what reduces noise and consumption, and consequently the operating expenses. OVHcloud states that only a “dry” cooling system is needed, ie in which the liquid is simply passed through coils in a similar way to what happens in liquid heatsinks for desktop computers. In this way it is possible to obtain a difference of about 20 ° C between the temperature of the liquid leaving and entering, enough to satisfy the cooling needs of the data centers.
