Samsung announces the 200MP ISCOCELL HPX sensor

Samsung has announced its new camera sensor for smartphones from 200 MP: is called “ISOCELL HPX”and follows the previous ones HP1 and HP3. Among its strengths, the pixel size of 0.56 microns: thanks to this quality, the area of ​​the camera module can be reduced by 20%, thus giving rise to the possibility of creating thinner and smaller smartphones. In addition, the Korean company has used the technology Advanced DTI (Deep Trench Isolation), which not only separates each pixel individually, but also increases sensitivity to capture crisp, vivid images. Among other things, the Super QPD autofocus solution will allow ISOCELL HPX to have ultra-fast and ultra-precise autofocus.

There is also no lack of support for technology “Tetra pixel” (16 pixels in one), which will improve the shooting quality in low light conditions. This mode, then, it will help the sensor to automatically switch between three different lighting modes depending on the available light: in a well-lit environment, the pixel size is kept at 0.56 microns (μm), making 200 million pixels; in a low-light environment, the pixel is converted to 1.12 microns (μm), yielding 50 million pixels; and in a low-light environment, 16 pixels are combined to create a 2.24 micron (μm) sensor and 12.5 million pixels.

This new sensor supports video recording in 8K at 30fps or 4K at 120fps and also, depending on the shooting environment, the option “Staggered HDR” will capture bright shadows and highlights in a scene with three different exposures: low, medium and high. It will then combine all three exposure photos to produce the highest quality HDR images and videos. As for market availability, Samsung hasn’t announced anything yet.
