It was once “we will break Greece’s back”, Today we remain humble and the kidneys are limited to wanting them break into spring rolls and kebabs. This can only be the meaning of the name change ministry of agricultural policies in ministry of agriculture and sovereignty tofoodone of those who sanction, at least in words, the passage of Italy to a “sovereign” regime (or “sovereign”, you name it …).

“Asian” spaghetti

The others are the ministry of the South and the seathat of Family and birth rateThat of the made in Italy and that ofEducation and merit. The name of the ministry entrusted to Francesco Lollobrigidabrother-in-law of the premier Giorgia Meloni, in reality it is not even that original: it is copied from scratch from that of the French “cousin”. It is more complicated to understand what will distinguish the old ministry, with a decidedly less high-sounding name, from the new one. Maybe he will take care of to watch over the primacy of Italian spaghetti (invented in the 6th century BC in the Indus valleylet’s remember …) and on the temporal power of Mondragone buffalo mozzarella?

On the net, as usual, the usual competition for teasing has been unleashed: there are those who imagine the “pasta Balilla” logo, those who propose an “autarchic turn” (the kebab will become Che papa, the sushi will become plum, the paella will be risella, the wurtsel more prosaically will become sausage and finally the guacamole will turn into Look at that springs) and those who enjoy draw up unlikely lists of “dietary deviations”.

Sea courgettes

The new minister, closely followed by reporters, explains: “The name is not unheard of, they also have it in France where they have better defended their products. We believe it is completely in line with the vocation we will have in this phase: to defend our products “. And here the memory can only bring us back to a famous gaffe of the sister-in-law. It was 2019 and Giorgia Meloni, in one of her many invectives against the European Union, thundered: “Today we have a Europe where I have to let Macron tell me how much the diameter of the zucchini must be that my fishermen can fish in the Italian seas”. All clear: the ministry of agriculture and food sovereignty is none other than the ministry of sea courgettes. How stupid not to think about it first.

The question that arises spontaneously, however, is: are Italian food products really so at risk as to require a ministry to protect them even more than they were already protected? Absolutely no. Italy is among the countries that already today, with its banal ministry of agricultural policies, protects the most. In fact, there are 315 products with DOP brands (protected designation of origin), Igp (Protected Geographical Indication), Stg (traditional specialty guaranteed). Among them stand out excellences such as Parmigiano Reggiano, San Daniele ham and the traditional balsamic vinegar of Modena. With all due respect to Europe’s detractors, it is precisely those brands that protect our products from counterfeiting, as well as guaranteeing their geographical origin and safeguarding compliance with the production phases. In particular, i PDO and Igp brands are exempt from some community regulations which concern health, hygiene, production and conservation of products: in practice they can continue to be processed as per tradition.

In short, the ministry of agriculture and food sovereignty looks more like a propaganda operation: the transition from the Ministry of Ecological Transition to the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security is much more worrying, because there is a clear intention to overshadow the policies for reducing emissions. Who knows if someone on the right will have posed the problem of considering climate change disastrous even for Italian agricultural productions. Finally, as a color note, one wonders why a ministry like this has not been assigned to the leader of the League, Matteo Salvini. For years now, the head of the Carroccio has traveled the length and breadth of the country, presiding over festivals and promoting typical products, tasting them personally. Not having granted him “his” ministry of him was really not a slight disgrace.
