Motorola Razr 2022 official: all new and TOP range | Preview and price

After a sabbatical in which we have not seen a renewal of the iconic Motorola Razr, the brand finally presents its new folding. A highly anticipated smartphone that completely renews design, hardware and positioning compared to the previous model.

A product that finally fits into a market where, until now, there was only one competitor: Samsung with Z Flip 3 and 4. Although in fact Huawei also has a small foldable product, the Chinese company is no longer the protagonist. of the Italian market due to the absence of Google services. Razr 2022 therefore not only does it present itself to the public as an all-round TOP of the range, but it has the task of being able to scratch part of the monopoly that Samsung deservedly has won.

I am an admirer of Motorola, a brand that I have in my heart since the 90s and that has been able to draw a very strong line in the mobile sector and in telecommunications in general. Razr was an iconic product, a smartphone that I had in infinite variations and that, perhaps like some super passionate reader who follows us, I customized by transforming the model of many years ago into a very particular gold variant. A different historical era that Motorola wanted to bring back with the first Razr Android model launched in 2019, then updated with the 5G version but remained too tied to the past.

A product that I never really appreciated as it was difficult to use due to a very large chin, chosen as a stylistic reference to the original Razr but, in recent years, not very functional and not suitable for the modern use of a smartphone.

Razr 2022 is a clear change, a completely different product that manages to offer everything you could want from a small foldable smartphone. As you can see from the comparison, Razr 2022 manages to have smaller dimensions than the previous range despite the significantly larger display. A choice that brings it very close to Z Flip 4 without making it a copy or clone.

Razr 2022 has in fact a unique, recognizable design and above all it does not abandon the references to the past. A smartphone that is finally appreciated, used perfectly and that does not make us give up anything.

The 2.7-inch external display immediately makes clear the uniqueness of the product compared to other solutions on the market. When closed you can use it, you can open applications, reply to messages, read notifications, interact with the camera and much more. If you really want to exaggerate, you could also watch a Youtube video via an external screen, not very useful but “it can be done”.

Once opened we have a 6.7 inch pOLED of excellent quality and that catapults us into the excellent Android interface customized by Motorola. Everything is exceptionally fast, smooth and snappy. This is obviously due to the clear change of features that places the product in the TOP range of the market by cutting with the past and with an unfortunate choice of a previous medium / high range processor.

Snapdragon 8+ gen 1, 144Hz display, 8GB of RAM (+ 2GB of RAM Boost), 256GB of internal memory are specifications that are not found in any folding smartphone to date and that bring this Razr 2022 to the top of its segment (ok, it wins easy with only 1 competitor launched months ago ed).

But Motorola hasn’t just changed design and hardware, it has also done a lot of work on the internal display and folding mechanism. Forget previous Razrnow not only is the zipper closure system perfect, but the fold is the best seen to date on a foldout with this form factor. Although the light can still be perceived slightly with the finger and at certain angles, it still shows a difference compared to the part of the screen that is not folded, Razr 2022 offers a truly excellent viewing experience and you will really find it hard to notice the fold even paying attention to it. Important note, Razr 2022 is IP52 certified.

Obviously it will take some time to understand the behavior of this screen in everyday use but I am confident that, as with other leaflets, there will be no major visual changes to the fold in the middle of the screen.

As mentioned, dropping the chin brings a huge advantage in daily usability. Not only are gestures now used with great pleasure, but all the customized software from Motorola demonstrates its completeness and effectiveness without bringing excessive distortions to the heart of Android.

Everything is well organized and the Moto application very well contains all the accessory features that have always distinguished the brand. Also noteworthy is the presence of Ready For both via wireless connection and via cable as the video output is present on Type-C.

The true Audio Jack is missing, but the SIM and Dual SIM support via eSIM is still present. As said in the 20 minutes we had available with the product, it was really a pleasure to play with it, use it and exploit it in all its main features. The hinge is not particularly hard, a technical choice made by Motorola at the design stage: the advantages are that it opens better than the Z Flip 4, the disadvantage is that it does not get stuck at every possible angle. Hard to say which is the best choice, the real use will help us understand it.

Although Motorola is not yet famous in the cameraphone sector despite the excellent insights received in this 2022 with Moto Edge 30 Ultra recently released as the first smartphone with 200MP, Razr 2022 still manages to integrate excellent sensors for its category.

50MP (f / 1.8, 2.0μm) for the main camera with also optical stabilizer (OIS), associated with a 13MP (f / 2.2, 1.12μm) with wide and macro AF and 120 ° angle of view. An effective combination, obviously not comparable to other top of the classic range but which still seems to be convincing from the first tests (we currently have no photo examples). Finally, internally there is a 32MP that certainly does not look bad in selfies.

Motorola Razr 2022 will be available starting today at the list price of € 1,199, certainly high positioning but in line with the type of product, the integrated hardware and the main competitors. Recall that Razr 2022 will have 3 years of updates and 4 years of security patches and that Android 13 is expected to arrive in Q1 2023.

All that remains now is to wait for it for the full review, not denying that I am very curious to try it.
