After the outbreak of the war in Ukraine the repercussions in the space field have been many and have affected both space agencies and private companies. An example is some ESA missions that have been postponed or rescheduled or the OneWeb satellites that have been launched with different carriers than the Soyuz. Another issue that was at the center of media attention especially in the first months of the war was the fate of the collaboration on board the International Space Station.
As we know the NASA together with its partners (such as ESA, JAXA and CSA) it would have chosen 2030 as the term of the operations of the ISS. This would still represent an excellent result considering that the useful operating life will be exceeded by a decade and that some modules are showing signs of wear. Some statements made by Dmitry Rogozin (ex-Director General of Roscosmos and currently on the battlefield in Ukraine) had made us think that the partnership between the agencies could have ended sooner, posing many problems.
Russia will operate at least until 2027 aboard the International Space Station
At the beginning of March 2022 it had been reiterated by several parties that the ISS it was operating normally despite the tensions due to war in Ukraine. To throw “gasoline on the fire” however, there were some statements made a few days earlier by Rogozin that he had threatened to crash the International Space Station uncontrollably on the United States or Europe. However, they were propaganda phrases with few real bases while certainly representing a way to keep the tension high.
At the beginning of April the situation had not improved (at least in terms of declarations) with Rogozin which emphasized how the sanctions tax to the Russia were illegal and damaging the space program of Roscosmos. Despite this, even though theultimatum there had been no substantial change aboard the ISS. However, only a few days later the collaboration with Rogozin, which he had added, was confirmed at least until 2024 “We will work normally until at least 2024 on all our plans. There are no changes”.
In July Dmitry Rogozin was replaced by Yuri Borisov (Deputy Prime Minister of Defense) as General Manager of Roscosmos. While people changed, the intentions seemed similar with the new senior official who said he still wanted to end the collaboration for the International Space Station by 2024 to bet everything on the ROSS station. The latter, however, may not be ready (at least for the initial part) not before 2028 and perhaps even later by postponing the plans of Roscosmos.
The latest news, released byTASS news agencyis that Mikhail Mishustin (Russian prime minister) signed a document that will allow Roscosmos to continue operating aboard the International Space Station in the period from 2023 to 2027. This foresees being able to continue with both manned and refueling missions as well as with the maintenance of the modules of the Russian segment and with research. This means that, at least until 2027, the collaboration between the various agencies would appear to be ensured.
