Users, especially in recent years, are looking for them from a smartphone maximum photographic performance. In this sense, Vivo e Zeiss have collaborated to develop the technology that will “animate” the camera of the new series of the Chinese brand: I live X90. The goal of this cooperation is very ambitious: take photos that perfectly match what the human eye sees. In particular, the attention of the two companies focused on the improvements to be made to two fields that are still critical for many devices: portraits and night photos.
To obtain more satisfactory results than competitors, the unprecedented optical system created by Vivo and Zeiss uses advanced lenses and coatings in such a way as to improve the signal / noise ratio of the photographic sensor. By the way, technology “True Color Restoration Engine” it should allow you to determine the right white balance. In addition, there is the “Ultra-Clear Image Quality Engine”an algorithm that uses a virtual model of the lens to recover about 35% of the information lost due to optical imperfections (there is also a multi-frame mode to improve photo quality and dynamic range).
The news, however, does not end here. To improve the quality of the portraits, the two companies have developed a system that detects up to 103 characteristic points on the face, also taking into account the pose of the subject. Subsequently, the software will apply automatic beauty filters and intervene in the background to adjust elements such as tone or brightness. As for night photos, the maximum sensitivity has been doubled: in fact the camera can reach ISO 102,400. There should be no problem, for example, in “capturing” a starry night sky. And speaking of sensors, Vivo said the sensor in future smartphones will have 77% better light sensitivity than the custom ISOCELL GNV sensor used in the X80 series.
Finally, much of the processing is handled by a new acceleration engine, which appears to be a successor to ISP V1. It was developed in-house and accelerates deep learning and computer vision activities, combining traditional ISP approaches with modern AI-based solutions.
Among other things, to manage all the required data there is the integrated SRAM on the custom Vivo chip: Compared to off-chip RAM, it has lower latency and uses less power.
