F1 Mexican Grand Prix RESULT: Max Verstappen makes history while Lewis Hamilton comes second again

“A tricky one today – I feel like we maximised everything today and yet we were one minute from Max. We need to make our bad days better. It’s a one-off here but I hope we can come back to our performane in Brazil.”

Max Verstappen put Red Bull’s off-track dramas to one side to win the Mexican Grand Prix and claim the record of most victories in a Formula One season.

Forty-eight hours after Red Bull were fined £6million for breaking the sport’s financial rules – before the team went on to boycott Sky Sports’ coverage – Verstappen claimed his 14th win of the year.

Michael Schumacher won 13 of the 18 races staged in 2004. Sebastian Vettel recorded the same number of wins from 19 rounds in 2013. But Verstappen now stands alone as the driver with the most wins in a single campaign.

Lewis Hamilton hoped a different tyre strategy to Verstappen would propel him to his first win of the year. But he crossed the line 15.1 seconds behind Verstappen, with Sergio Perez third. George Russell finished fourth for Mercedes.

A very cool podium this – the top-3 slowly lifted up to the podium via a lift, with winner Max Verstappen lifted up alongside his rapid Red Bull car!

The familiar tones of the Dutch and Austrian national anthems now….

“I gave my best, today at the start I pushed hard. Unfortunately we had a bad stop which prevented the undercut on Lewis.

“Given how difficult overtaking was, it was key at the beginning – it didn’t work out for us, I really wanted more today.”

His last answer comes in Spanish for the adoring 70,000 Mexicans in the stadium section of the track!

“Definitely a bit awkward today, boos all day! What a race and event. Ultimately they had the better tyre strategy…

“I’m not sure it was the right tyre, I thought we should have started on the soft but the hard tyre was an offset. Congratulations to Max – good to be up here to seperate the two.”

“To stay in the lead after turn one, we were on a different strategy to everyone else but an incredible result. We had to look after our tyres but we made it work.

“It’s amazing, an incredible atmosphere and we love to come here.

“It’s been an incredible year so far, we’ll definitely enjoy it and try to go for more.”

“Mega job everyone, great job with the pit stop. Thanks for continuing to push, they were too quick today. It’s coming though…”

Another Sunday of frustration for the seven-time world champion. Just two races left to try and claim a win this year…

Another cruise control of an afternoon for the double world champion – Max Verstappen wins the Mexico City Grand Prix!

Lewis Hamilton comes second, a fair bit down the road, with Sergio Perez third for the second consecutive year at his home race! In fact, it’ll be an identical podium to last year!

Verstappen delighted over team radio: “Amazing guys, what a fantastic race again. 14 wins, unbelievable season!”

George Russell gets the fastest lap and an extra point!

Max Verstappen effortlessly smooth out in front here – 14.4 seconds ahead of Hamilton! The Dutchman looks set for another race win this year!

Perez 3.6 seconds ahead of Russell, who pits as he goes for the fastest lap! He’s comfortably in fourth, so won’t lose position…

VSC ends very quickly as the stewards remove the Alpine from the track…

George Russell, meanwhile, worried about a puncture as he says he’s gone over some debris. One to watch for the race remainder…
