The series, scattered with some absurd turns and moments of reckless hilarityit seems to be born from Moffat’s desire to play with the recurring themes and expedients of his fiction. The sly Grieff is an almost fictional version of the same author, who really likes to do the deux ex machina intellectually superior to ordinary mortals, with slightly irritating effects. The insane misunderstanding behind the vicar’s troubles are, however, much more unnerving, with the poor fellow being sucked more and more into a vortex. Macbethian of crimes, gradually more and more at the mercy of bad luck and psychological weakness badly disguised in a moral sense. He is the exemplar who must demonstrate Grieff’s thesis on the innatism of humanity’s murderous instinct and his path follows precisely the stages of an increasingly narrow and tortuous path that seems to leave no choice. However the choice exists, free will exists and here too Moffat gives vent to his passion for the staging of moral dilemmas brought to extreme reflection and extreme consequences. The result is a story that seems very intelligent but is mostly a hoax; he is alone the author who makes fun of us and plays with us as Grieff does with the unfortunates who come to visit him, but he does it with irresistible charm.
