The Russian missiles that struck Kyiv on Tuesday were fired from the air, according to the Pentagon, though it is believed they were launched from outside of Ukrainian territory.
Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said that “Russian aircraft” fired the missiles that struck Kyiv overnight, noting that “for the duration of this campaign, Russia has used a mix of capabilities,” including airborne, ground-based and sea-launched missiles, to target cities and civilian infrastructure.
When asked whether the strikes represented a shift in the balance of control of the skies over Ukraine, Ryder cautioned that “these strikes are probably being conducted outside of Ukrainian territory,” noting that “the airspace over Ukraine continues to be contested.”
