Remember PewDiePie, the multi-millionaire king of YouTube and the first single user to surpass 100 million subscribers on Google’s video streaming platform? Well, the king was deposedbecause now number one (of individual users) is MrBeast.
Between Jimmy Donaldson and Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg – these are the real names of MrBeast and PewDiePie – to tell the truth there is not much difference: 112 million the first, 111 million the secondbut that’s enough for a historic overtaking after a long period of unchallenged dominance by the Swedish youtuber (since 2013).
Same platform, same business and same millionaire income but with a different approach: PewDiePie – who now lives in Japan with his Italian wife Marzia Bisognin – has become famous for his comments and reactions to video gamesMrBeast offers videos of challenge or how to spend money in an “alternative” way, and has recently been active in fundraising for charitable purposes in the food and environmental fields (TeamSeas and TeamTrees among them). Its growth in recent years has been exponential: 70 million subscribers in 2021, 100 million last summer up to the record just reached of 112 million.
Making an entertaining video is one thing, ensuring every single second of a video keeps the viewer hooked is another, and MrBeast’s retention rate [tempo di visualizzazione medio rapportato alla durata complessiva del video] and the number of views speak for themselves,
Steven Bridges, another popular youtuber who has millions of views, explained to the BBC. But be careful not to get confused: MrBeast is number one among individual youtubers who have their own channel on the platform, but it’s not the channel which, in general, has the most subscribers in the world. This record belongs in fact to T SeriesIndia’s largest record label and film production house with over 229 million subscribers on YouTube.
