The Chinese video card Moore Threads MTT S80 not only offers fluctuating performance, at times similar to a GeForce GTX 1060 6 GBbut it works with a limited number of games and consumes 110W at idle. This is the summary of the first reviews of this solution, announced in recent weeks, and published in the East (via Video cardz).

Based on proprietary architecture MUSA (MT Unified System Architecture)this solution integrates 4096 cores side by side with 16GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit basis, for a computing power of approximately 14.4 TFLOPS. The choice of adopting a PCIe 5.0 x16 interface is peculiar.
The three reviews that appeared online, all identical and therefore probably not entirely independent, highlight a more than immature product, years away from the capabilities of NVIDIA and AMD solutions on the market. There MTT S80 it only supports the DX9 and DX11 APIs and the latter only partially.

Tested by preview with titles like League of Legends and CrossFire, MTT S80 has produced mixed results. In League it averaged 149fps at 1080p on max settings and 128fps at 4K, clearly underperforming at 1080p. In CrossFire the average frame rate recorded in 1080p stopped at 182 fps to drop to 165 fps in 4K. Unfortunately, the magazines were unable to include other cards in the tests to make a comparison.
The site ITHome also tried CS:GO, noting an average frame rate of 213fps. Incidentally, due to partial API support and driver status, the S80 only handles some titles well: according to information from China. we talk about 11 games supported and 60 more in the works.
In the synthetic tests compatible with DX9 such as 3DMark 2006 and Unigine Valley 1.0, the video card registered a overall performance far from the RTX 3060 that the computing power (12.7 TFLOPS) seemed to indicate as a possible opponent (in some tests, such as the pixel fillrate, it is even ahead). The values scored by the Chinese GPU in the Valley are similar to solutions such as the GeForce RTX 1060 6 GB or the GTX 970 according to ITHome.



The most important problem, however, concerns i consume: in mode idle the card recorded a value of 114.6W, rising to 210-240W under load. Extremely high values, compared to the proposals of AMD and NVIDIA which can be attested on levels from 10 to 30W depending on the power of the card.

This happens because the card driver/firmware doesn’t allow frequencies to scale down. The Chinese company is working to correct this behavior with an update. By the way it is interesting to note that the S80 is equipped with an 8-pin EPS12V power connector for power supply (can deliver up to 300W), typically used for CPUs. Along with the GPU, Moore Threads includes an 8-pin dual PEG to single 8-pin EPS12V adapter.
The company therefore still has a great job to be done in terms of product optimizationboth in terms of performance and consumption. A long and certainly not without hitches, as Intel has shown us in recent months with the arrival of the first Arc video cards. The MTT S80 is bundled with an ASUS B660 motherboard a 2999 Chinese Yuanabout 410 euros.
