The new course of Twitter by Elon Musk is under the watchful eye of many, concerned that the social network could become a den of fake news and hate. From unblocking Trump to amnesty for suspended accounts in recent years, Musk has shown he is willing to put very few rules for public discussion on social media.
His position has not only alarmed advertisers, worried about being linked to a social network where the so-called “hate speech” could take over, but also leading Apple and Google to make the decision to kick Twitter out of their respective App Stores. An eventuality that is not currently on the agenda, but that someone seems to be venting. “If Apple and Google kick Twitter out of their app stores, Elon Musk should produce his own smartphone. Half the country would happily ditch iPhone and Android, nosy and biased. That guy builds rockets to mars, a stupid smartphone should be easy, right?” Wheeler writes.
A tweet that, leaving aside the nonsense about the construction of rockets (Musk doesn’t build anything, if anything, he supports those who do with his money and vision), has captured the attention of the entrepreneur who has not ruled out yet another development. “I certainly hope it doesn’t come to that, but, yeah, if there’s no other choice, I’ll make an alternative phone” was the comment of the CEO of Twitter, not new to promises on the spot.
Someone is willing to bet that a phone pushed by Elon Musk (Wheeler has renamed it telONphone), perhaps based on an Android fork and with pre-installed Twitter, it could be snapped up, but the doubts are more than legitimate. For now, the hypothesis should be taken as a boutade, as well as the survey initiated by Wheeler which at the time of writing sees about 53% of people in favor of buying the alleged Musk smartphone.
It should be noted, however, that the new course of Twitter does not like Phil Schiller, head of the Apple App Store. The longtime executive canceled his account on the platform, possibly also due to a comment by Musk on the 30% pence withheld by Apple, defined as “a hidden 30% tax on the Internet”.
