Toyotaas we know, does not only look at hybrid and electric technologies but also at those based on hydrogen. The Japanese automaker is now offering the Mirai, a Fuel Cell car and is also experimenting with hydrogen as an alternative fuel to the traditional one. Now, the manufacturer takes its strategy one step further by announcing that it has started developing the a Fuel Cell version of the Toyota Hilux.

This project is being carried out by a consortium led by Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK which sees some UK companies among its partners: Ricardo, ETL, D2H and Thatcham Research. In addition, Toyota Motor Europe will also work on the project, which will provide technical support for the development of the Fuel Cell powertrain.

The development of the Toyota Hilux Fuel Cell will be financed by the British organization Advanced Propulsion Center (APC). In fact, last year Toyota had obtained a loan from the APC, presenting a “project to contribute to the development of new technologies and more environmentally friendly mobility solutions“.

From a technical point of view, Toyota has made it known that it will start from its own to create the new Hilux powertrain second generation fuel cells, those that we find today on board the Toyota Mirai. The first prototypes will be ready in 2023 and production will be handled by Toyota Motor Manufacturing UK at the Burnaston site.

If the tests are successful, it points to produce a small series of the Toyota Hilux Fuel Cell. Matt HarrisonPresident and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, commented:

The UK is one of the key markets for pickup trucks and is an important market for Toyota. This funding represents a huge opportunity to develop a carbon-neutral solution in a key market segment. We want to thank the UK government for funding which will allow the consortium to study the development of a fuel cell powertrain for the Toyota Hilux, supporting our ambition to achieve carbon neutrality.
