And the Formigine Castle to frame the award ceremony of the 10 finalist photos of the Italian edition of Wiki Loves Monumentsthe biggest photo contest to the world organized by project communities Wikimedia which this year had as its main theme that of castles and fortifications. The initiative, which contributes to the free sharing on the internet of content relating to the enhancement and conservation of cultural sites and monuments around the world, celebrated the conclusion of this edition with the awarding of the winning photos.

Castles section

Thanks to the collaboration with Italian Institute of Castlesfor the first time thousands of fortifications protagonists of the history and of the Italian panorama have been able to be photographed in order to be able to enrich the online encyclopedia most famous in the world, also promoting the diffusion of Italian culture abroad. Alongside the ranking of photos of castles and fortifications were also awarded the most beautiful shots of the general sectionwhere photographers could upload photos of over 22 thousand monuments from all over Italy. In first place among the winners of the castles and fortifications section is the photo of Castel del Montea suggestive shot in black and white by Cristina Paveri which seals the fortress in a play of light and shadow. For the first time this year the castle was included in the list of monuments that can be photographed for the competition, thanks to the collaboration between Wikimedia Italia and the Italian Institute of Castles.

Second place is also from Puglia: silver medal at Norman-Swabian castle of Sannicandro, Bari, photographed by Matteo Pappadopoli. The bronze goes to Torre Abate, it is Vanni Lazzeri who immortalizes its melancholic poetry. The fourth place goes to the Castle of Salorno: the photograph taken by the user Syrio in South Tyrol shows the fairy-tale face of the castle set in the rock. The user Anghellos signs the black and white shot of the Astura Tower of Neptune, which completes the five awarded.

General section

To win the gold medal in the general section is the user ElisaSit with a snap in grayscale of the Central Civic Library of Turin. Following, on the podium, Maurizio Moro who once again this year wins a leading role in the competition thanks to the shot of Austro-Hungarian Cemetery – Glimpses of light, a celestial vision in the city of Verona. Third place to the romantic View from the Matilde tower, a nuanced look at the Tuscan hills surrounding San Miniato by the user LuiRossini. Just below the podium Pietrapertosa in white from above, a snapshot by the user Teodcorbo of the municipality of Basilicata covered with snow and characterized by the play of light from the mountains that surround it. Finally, the fifth prize is for the Mole Antonelliana in the eveninga shot by user Abbrey82 that captures the monumental building at nightfall, framed by the city of Turin and the Alps that watch over it.

Right in 2022 the municipality of Turin has joined Wiki Loves Monumentsmaking it photographable for the first time for the competition the Mole Antonelliana and many other city monuments. Finally Fiaf awarded its special prize to The Castle under the starswhere Castel del Monte, already the protagonist of the winning photo of the fortresses and castles section, is photographed by the user Calogero77 in a long, hot, and magical night.
