Giorgia Meloni brakes on the Pos: the 60 euro threshold is just an indication

The budget law produced by the Italian government continues to cause discussion and among the hottest topics, which we have already addressed on other occasions in our pages, are the ceiling on the use of cash and the minimum threshold for applying fines to merchants who they will refuse to accept the Pos, which the draft text raises to 60 euros from the previous 30 euros.

The two measures seem to row against the adoption of digital payments and give greater importance to cash, a controversial aspect of the maneuver which according to many it would wink at tax evaderswhich would thus have greater margins for the use of cash deriving from undeclared work. Not everyone disagreesespecially in the majority, who on the subject of raising the Pos ceiling see a measure in favor of small traders, who it will allow them to pay less fees derived from bank transactions.

But we had said it several times and we reiterate it, the road to the final budget law is still long and the final text will have to be approved by 31 December, the date which will be followed by publication in the Official Gazette and entry into force on 1 January 2023. It is no coincidence that Palazzo Chigi released a note a few days ago in which it remarked that the question of the minimum limit of the Pos at 60 euros would be discussed in the European Commission, also to understand if it was compatible with the conditions of the PNRR imposed on the Italy, which envisaged the adoption of measures to combat tax evasion. The risk is that the policy undertaken by Mario Draghi and thanks to which we have already received a tranche of funds, goes in the opposite direction and is not liked by the European Union.

Given the growing controversy, Giorgia Meloni recently wanted to clarify the issue better of the limit of 60 euros for the Pos, and he did so from his social page on which he created the column #giorgianotebookduring which he wants to provide weekly answers and updates on the hottest topics faced by the government and most debated.

And precisely with regard to the Pos, the prime minister specified that that of 60 euros is only an indication, which in his opinion could also be lowered, according to the indications that will arrive at European level in the coming weeks. Here is the full video below.

“That of 60 euros is indicative, for me, it could be even lower. There is obviously an interlocution with the EU Commission, because the issue of electronic payment is one of the objectives of the PNRR, we need to see how it ends”

While defending the basic principles of the amendment, i.e. the protection of merchants from bank commissions in one of the least happy economic times in the history of the Italian Republic, Giorgia Meloni recalls that the indications from Brussels will not be long in coming and there is no intention on the part of the government to go against the EU.

Not only will this step be evaluated by the EU, but also the extension of the flat tax from 65,000 to 85,000 for the self-employed on a flat-rate basis, the limit on the use of cash, and all other substantial interventions in terms of the economy, which could be subject changes before final approval.
