There has often been talk of Apple’s interest in producing a self-driving vehicleand some information recently leaked online by means of reliable sources: the aim would be to reach the market by 2026 with a price target below $100,000in order to attract the largest possible share of the public in relation to the high-end market.

Apple Car, expected to launch in 2026 with features

The news was reported from Bloomberg. According to the source, in Apple’s initial plans there was a futuristic vehicle in which the passengers could also sit facing each other in a cockpit without a steering wheel or pedals. Since the project has been scaled down, according to the insider Mark Gurman, and provides for a more traditional car with a seat reserved for the driver, steering wheel and pedals. Apparently the fully autonomous driving function will be missingbut there will be the possibility of accessing assisted driving on busy roads.

Apple Car, scheduled for launch in 2026 with limited self-driving capabilities

The Apple Car could enter into direct competition with Tesla (or with Porsche’s Taycan line), a brand that has always focused on electric propulsion and which in recent years has been pushing rather aggressively on driver assistance features. In the USA, the vehicles of Elon Musk’s company start at around 50,000 dollars, but some models can go even beyond 100,000 dollars: in short, if the Apple Car had a base price of 100,000 dollars, it could compete directly with some variants of Tesla Model S and Model X.

What appears clear that the Apple Car will not be a car for everyonebut fit into a rapidly expanding high-end market. Apple’s original plan was to aim for a price target of around $120,000, but the company is considering going below the psychological threshold of $100,000. There could be several reasons for the re-evaluation of the plans: one of these is the presence of more limited autonomous driving technologies compared to the initial plans, especially in the first versions of the car.

The Apple Car project has not yet been finalizedbut the company expects to complete the design by the end of 2023. The list of features will be established in 2024, while road tests will begin in 2025 with the launch scheduled for 2026. The search for the production partner vehicle material still in progress: Apple has embarked on serious negotiations only with Volkswagen, but the latest rumors in this regard date back to a few years ago.
