The co-founder and CEO of Slack, Stewart Butterfieldannounced he will be leaving the company next month, in January 2023. The move comes a decade after Slack launched and just over two years after it was acquired by Salesforce.
Slack CEO is leaving the company
It’s unclear why Butterfield will be leaving Slack, but coincidentally too Bret Taylorthe CEO of Salesforce who had overseen the acquisition of Slack for 27.7 billion dollars, will resign in early 2023. There will therefore be a profound renewal in the leadership of the two companies, which are now inextricably linked.
Slack in many ways launched the market for instant collaboration applications for businesses, with competitors like Teams and Zoom only arriving later. While Teams is a platform that has grown significantly, doubling active users annually for the past two years, Slack has found it more difficult to grow despite the spread of remote working with the pandemic. The company has attributed this phenomenon to the inclusion of Teams in the Microsoft 365 package, the theme around which the antitrust intervention request revolves.
