Cloudflare has announced that it will increase the prices of its services for the first time in its history. The price increases are equal to 25% and will be implemented as of January 15, 2023.

Cloudflare increases the prices of its services

Inflation is hitting everyone hard, but some products and services are growing faster than average. Cloudflare services join that group, with a 25% increase which will take effect from next month. The Pro plan, for example, will pass from $20 to $25 per month, while the Business plan will pass from $200 to $250 monthly. The company will introduce annual plans (Pro at $240, Business at $2400) which will effectively keep the current prices, but which will require you to pay the full amount upfront.

Current customers and those who subscribe by January 15, 2023 will keep the current price until May 14, 2023.

Cloudflare motivated these increases and the introduction of annual plans with the need to be able to better plan their investments. “One of the challenges we face is cash flow management to finance these investments at the rate we would like”, they write CEO Matthew Prince and President Michelle Zatlyn. “We invest upfront in building our network or developing a new feature, but then we only get paid monthly by our users. It inherently drives the pace at which we innovate. We can invest even faster (hire new engineers, put opera pi server) if customers who know they will use our services for the next year pay us in advance. […] In other words, we’re making this change in the hope that most of you won’t pay us more than you used to.”

In other words, Cloudflare seems to want to offload, at least in part, the risks associated with new investments on customers by asking them to pay everything immediately or, alternatively, to pay more.
