The presentation of the new iPad Pro M2 (our review here) brought with it a really important announcement for the future of the platform, namely the news that Blackmagic Design was working on a version of DaVinci Resolve designed for iPadOS. The most interesting aspect of the story is that the application in question was not presented as a mobile version of the famous software dedicated to color correction, but as a complete counterpart of DaVinci Resolve 18, capable of exploiting the potential of the latest SoCs from the M family featured on iPad.
After a short period of beta, now DaVinci Resolve is officially available on the App Store for everyone and this allows anyone to experience the iPad potential for too long dormant. The latest generations of Apple tablets have made significant progress on the hardware front, but it has always been the software that has not lived up to expectations. Blackmagic wanted to make a clear change of pace and, unlike what Adobe did, it decided to bring the full DaVinci Resolve experience to iPad.
The application is available for free on the App Store and you can use all its functions without any particular limitation. Those who are looking for more options and an extremely complete and professional tool can do it the upgrade to the DaVinci Resolve Studio version via a single in-app purchase for €114.99which allows you to fully enjoy this tool dedicated to the world of professional editing.
For all the others it is possible to use the many functions of the basic version without spending a cent and this is certainly an excellent business card. Not so much for Blackmagic – given that its software is already known and appreciated – but for the iPad itself and its advancement as a platform suitable for even the most demanding working contexts. The fact of being able to try DaVinci Resolve for free, in fact, represents an opportunity for many to see how it’s done desktop-grade software on iPad and let’s hope this inspires many other developers – and Apple itself – to follow suit by Blackmagic.
DaVinci Resolve makes the most of the latest iPad Pros with M1 and M2 SoCs, but it’s compatible with any iPad equipped with the A12 Bionic chip or higher. Of course, not all the more advanced options are supported by the less performing SoCs, but it is interesting that we have tried to intercept the widest possible audience. As far as features are concerned, we point out that the iPad version also supports external monitors (only on M1 and M2), uploading files and projects also from external memories, collaborative work via the Blackmagic cloud, fully supports Apple Pencil and the ‘use of mouse and keyboard and perfectly handles video formats H.264, H.265, ProRes 422, Blackmagic RAW and many others.
