2022 was also a complex year for the world of technology: the global landscape has favored the conditions for some important paradigm shifts, accelerating trends already underway and creating new ones. Some realities have taken advantage and gears have been set in motion which, in the medium and long term, will lead to advantages and benefits for consumers; someone else, at the same time, has suffered a setback and there are protagonists who, even in a somewhat unpredictable way, have struggled to stay afloat or have even collapsed under the weight of the economic and energy crisis.

We have tried to take stock of the most significant events of the year that is about to end, identifying winners and losers: a rather long video in which we have our say on a large number of events, which however also wants to be a starting point for discussion, so let us know in the comments what you think. Good news was, without a doubt, that linked to the European Union legislation on USB-C: a decision that in the coming years will free us from some chargers and make consumers’ lives a little easier. It doesn’t only involve telephones, it is true, but there is no doubt that there has been a lot of talk about it in relation to Apple and the iPhone: even the house of the bitten apple will have to adapt and in all probability will already do so with the iPhone 15.

Among the social media this year, TikTok was the master: 2022 saw not only the social platform establish itself further on the global scene but, in a landscape in which other competitors have lost ground and had problems, the product of Byte Dance has managed to gain further market shares and impose some of the elements that distinguish it on the rest of the world of social networks (just think of how much Instagram has changed to follow him).

In the connected home and IoT space, the arrival of the Matter 1.0 standard is a step that will help users to more easily navigate hundreds if not thousands of different products. There are many brands that have already adopted it, with announcements involving names such as Amazon and Ikea in recent weeks, and there is no doubt that they will continue to grow.

If we talk about offers, there is no doubt that good news has also arrived from the world of TVs, with Samsung and its QD-OLEDs which have further opened up the market and given users a valid (albeit in some ways immature) ) alternative. The OLED market, among other things, has literally exploded with more and more solutions involving other areas, such as monitors and notebooks.

If in general there have been other positive trends for consumers, such as those linked to the offer of increasingly convenient optical fiber and with higher performance, just think of the growing presence of 10Gbps, there is no doubt that some positive news has involved announcements that perhaps they touch our daily lives but which one day will be able to bring us benefits and will be followed with enormous interest. Above all the dream, now a little closer, of using nuclear fusion to produce clean energy.

Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter is far from closed and books are likely to be written about it in the coming years. For the moment what we take home from this atypical change of hands are the confusion, the layoffs and the feeling that, to date, it is difficult to understand what will become of Twitter. Musk has said he will step down as CEO (as soon as he finds a suitable replacement) but in some ways the damage has already been done.

Still from a social point of view, Meta did not have a good 2022: on the one hand the numbers are no longer as positive and encouraging as they used to be, with consequent cuts in personnel which represent sad news for the company, on the other the much talked about metaverse it has been the subject of much talk but very little application. A very expensive bet that today it is not clear exactly what it will lead to Meta and above all with what timing.

In the gaming area, there were two events that marked the year, certainly not positively. Stadia, once the rising star of cloud gaming also thanks to the technological overwhelming power of Google, has raised the white flag, effectively becoming a promise not kept. And then the acquisition of Activision by Microsoft has remained for the moment an intention opposed by several governments and regulatory bodies: however you look at it, an important setback for Xbox’s growth intentions, especially if you don’t should actually accomplish.

Finally, 2022 was a decidedly negative year for the world of cryptocurrencies. And we’re not just talking about valuations, which have dropped drastically, but in general for the ecosystem that has suffered sensational falls, above all that of FTX. Events that have had repercussions on many investors and undermined trust in the ecosystem, creating a climate of distrust and suspicion that it will take a long time to fix.
