Some people face it well in advance, others prefer to wait. But no one can escape one of the most difficult challenges of the human being: assemble an Ikea piece of furniture. We’ve all been there – it’s a modern day rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood.
It starts with the classic visit to one of the stores. “A little shopping never killed anyone“, is the thought that everyone thinks before crossing the threshold of that yellow and blue hell. Then, once you set foot inside you can’t get out anymore: turning your back you understand that you can only go forward, trying to overcome that labyrinth infinite that you could not imagine from the outside. You breathe a sigh of relief and face escalators, pools made of wooden micropencil, endless halls full of bedrooms that want to confuse you into believing you’re always in the same spot. You think you’ll be trapped in that place forever: you were there to buy a wardrobe but your trolley is full of teddy bears in pajamasnapkin holders, one-color cups and objects whose real use you have not understood but just when you think you are crushed by those white meters of paper that are now like snakes for you who don’t want to let you leave, see the furniture department. In your last flash of life you tear off those meters and look for the note on which you had written the codes. After looking at it you head towards the right shelf, driven only by the echo of the noise of the speakers that you hear in the distance. Finally you find it and discover that that little wardrobe of about one meter is enclosed in a narrow and long packaging, very long, perhaps twice as long as the one you had already seen already assembled kilometers before. You decide to take it anyway, given the effort, and put it in the car placing it diagonally between the front passenger window and the right rear passenger window. It’s two degrees outside and it’s pouring.
For a few days, you will leave that medieval carousel spear in an inconspicuous place in the living room because you don’t want to see itbut at the same time you want to mount it. Finally the day comes when you decide to assemble that cabinet, aware of questioning your life and relationships with the people you love: you start with the spirit of a child at the first time facing the Legofinish as in an episode of Squid Game.
Here is a list of ten ‘impossible’ pieces of furniture from Ikea and we do it to warn you. And help you safeguard your mental health and your loved ones…
